Tasting Trivanović white wines from the 2016 vintage & En Primeur Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Written on 19-05-2017 by Dusan Jelic, Belgrade, Serbia

A happy group of winelovers tasting excellent Trivanovic wines in the Belgrade's Vino wine bar

On Tuesday, May 9, 2017 in a wine bar ‘Vino’ in the Crveni Krst (‘Red Cross’) suburb of Belgrade, a small yet carefully selected a group of wine connoisseurs was to explore the latest wines of the respected winery from Fruška Gora - Trivanović Winery from Erdevik.

A group of sommeliers, wine journalists and wine traders tasted five wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 to be released only in early 2018.

The guests therefore have experienced firsthand an exciting development and progress of the winery about to enter their best years, with their substantial vineyards entering the prime age.

Ivan Trivanović, on behalf of the winery, presented the selected five wines, taking a great pleasure to describe ideas and concepts behind each wine, as well as the market’s feedback pertaining to the Trivanović wines. These wines are getting better and better and the wine market reacts accordingly!

We first tasted Grašac 2016. Serbia is finally accepting back the ancient name of this autochthonous white variety, which is, for instance, called Graševina in Croatia. This is very important, and not only pertaining to the marketing-related reasons. It is also heartening that a significant number of Serbian wineries rejected outright an inadequate name ‘Italian Riesling’ used for this variety!

Our next wine was white blend Trigio 2016, where the name is composed by combining the name Trivanović and a varietal name ‘Pinot Grigio’ which is dominant in the blend, accompanied with the two more varieties: Chardonnay and Grašac. We then tasted 100% Pinot Grigio 2016, which was a star of the tasting for all present winelovers, with no exception! Trivanović Sauvignon Blanc 2016 was produced in a small quantity and it is a great wine for the forthcoming summer.

For the very end of this tasting we enjoyed En Primeur Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, scheduled for the market sometimes early 2018. This Cab managed to demonstrate its beauty and elegance well ahead of the official release and it will develop further in the meantime.

Short wine descriptions originating from the tasting notes of the present guests

Grašac 2016

This is an elegant and refreshing wine with a lovely yellow-gold color and 11.5% of alcohol. An exceptional freshness and lovely citrus aromas dominate with long, seductive notes of lime and grapefruit. It is a dry wine with excellent acidity. It is definitely a great company for light white meat or fish. With an ex-cellar price of RSD 550 (close to 5€) + VAT - it is indeed a great value for money!

Trigio 2016

This wine has a lovely structure and well-integrated acidity with only 12% of alcohol. On the nose one can pick subtle aromas of bananas and grapefruit. In a very long aftertaste exciting notes of citrus fruits dominate. Trigio 2016 is an ideal wine for grilled vegetables and fish. Its price of RSD 550 (close to 5€) + VAT means it is not going stay on wine shops shelves for a long time!

Pinot Grigio 2016

It has an exceptional fruity character. The wine has fantastic acidity and it is medium-bodied. A plethora of refreshing notes and tastes persistently follows this wine until the lingering aftertaste - where exciting aromas of lemon and green apples gently mix with one another. Alcohol of 12% is superbly integrated. This wine is an ideal partner for fish soup, white meat and spicy medium-bodied goat cheeses.

Sauvignon Blanc 2016

This wine has all the usual varietal characteristics. One immediately picks fine acidity and lovely notes of citruses and gooseberries. This is a dry wine with 13% of alcohol. A very intensive finish has hints of grapefruits and green apples. The Sauvignon Blanc 2016 is a perfect partner for goat cheese and roasted chicken or turkey.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

You are immediately pleasantly surprised with impressive notes of forest strawberries on the nose. Fruitiness that impress! It is an extremely elegant wine with only 12,5% of alcohol. Layers of aromas are intertwining with subtle notes of black pepper. This wine still develops and waits for 2018 to reach its full potential. Lovely acidity and silky tannins suggest that this is the wine which will impress and conquer with its elegance!

It is undisputed that Fruška Gora wine region is one of the currently most exciting regions on the Serbian wine scene. New generations of vignerons, by using the latest state-of-the-art technologies while at the same time deeply respecting the traditions, knowing their terroir, are making wines that are gaining recognition in Serbia, our region and elsewhere. This constitutes a part of the big and well-respected wine culture. Thanks to wines and local gastronomy, wine tourism is a trendy item now and the ‘Serbian wine dream’ develops vigorously!

Our tasting of five wines from Trivanovic winery demonstrated a big potential of 2016 vintage as well as an elegant power of 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon.

As a conclusion we can state that Trivanovic Winery produces excellent wines and growing from strength to strength!
